How Much Should I Spend on an Engagement Ring?
Ever hear the rule that you’re supposed to spend “3 months’ salary” on an engagement ring? Toss that rule right in the bin! Here’s what we do know about the average spend on engagement rings over the past two years. In 2021 the average amount spent on an engagement ring in the US was $6,000 while the average spend in 2020 was closer to $3,756. So what does that mean for you? Pretty much nothing!
Spend what you are comfortable spending and what makes the most sense for your situation. Maybe you will both be planning & paying for the wedding yourself so it doesn’t make the sense to go big on the ring. Or maybe you are in the process of searching for your first home and you take more joy in the idea of making the place where you rest your head your “forever home.” It all comes down to your own unique situation and what you feel comfortable with!
Tips for Engagement Ring Shopping
Online resources are your friend! Don’t be afraid to jump from site to site to get a feel for each of the ring shops you’ll be visiting. You want to get a feel for the type of experience & customer service you’ll be receiving before walking through the door.
Know your budget ahead of time! It’s very easy to get wrapped up in the excitement of shopping for an engagement ring and to be persuaded by the salesperson when you find a ring that looks and feels like your beloved. Stick to your budget, for now. Rings can always be “upgraded” on your 5th anniversary.
Bring a supportive but honest friend! This is a crazy exciting moment in your life, and you might be bursting at the seams dying to let someone know what is about to happen. By all means, let in a close trusted friend or family member. Someone who is a supportive, honest, grounded force in your life. It can help you keep things in perspective having them by your side when it’s time to shop.
Nervous? It’s Normal! Feel nervous, excited, anxious, a total flood of crazy varying emotions? Totally normal. Taking the next step in your relationship brings out all the feelings. You’ll be merging lives, and families, buying a home (if you haven’t already), and all-the-things. It’s completely normal to have this cast array of emotions wash over you during this pivotal life moment.
Our personal belief! Engagement rings aren’t “just for girls”. Rings have no gender and love is love. Guys can buy rings for guys, girls can buy rings for guys, and girls can buy rings for girls! So, guys, gals, and non-binary pals, engagement rings are for your forever date. We want to support you in finding the best ring for your person, in this post!

Do You Plan on Buying a Natural Diamond?
Know the 4 C’s! Each of these is a driving force in the appearance and cost of the diamond you’ll be buying
1) Cut
This is the shape of your diamond and the shape of its facets/mounting. Are you looking for a cushion cut ring, emerald cut, princess cut, or a round diamond?
2) Color
Color refers to the color of the diamond. Sounds easier than it is. When it comes to color, diamonds can be categorized as white (these have a somewhat more milky appearance but light is able to pass through), essentially colorless (the rarest and blinding color grade, lots of sparkle!), or fancy (pink, yellow, etc.).
3) Clarity
Clarity is the measurement of the presence or absence of flaws within the diamonds. When shopping for an engagement ring, you might also hear the terms inclusions which refer to the internal “flaws” of the diamond. Or the term blemishes, which refers to the external flaws of the diamond. Both of these terms represent the clarity of the diamond. Additionally, jewelers & gemologists use a rating system for clarity that begins at FL (flawless) and goes all the way up to I (included). There are a number of ranges and abbreviations on this scale so don’t be afraid to ask your jeweler the rating listed on the ring that you have your eye on.
4) Carat
This is the most well-known of the four C’s. Carat refers to the weight of the diamond. Any diamond that is over one carat in size will gradually increase in price because larger stones are more rare. The “average” carat size on an engagement ring has a diamond weighing about 1 – 2 carats. And, just for fun, when J. Lo & Ben Affleck became engaged (again) the actor gifted her with a 6.10-carat radiant-cut pink Harry Winston diamond.
The 5th “C”!
It’s also important to note that a 5th ”C” has been added to the list. The 5 C stands for conflict-free. Conflict-free diamonds are diamonds that have been mined ethically by workers who receive fair wages in a safe environment that is free from human rights violations. Additionally, the term conflict-free/ethical diamonds refers to diamonds that have not been used to finance civil wars against recognized governments in their regions.
